SARTELL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team wrapped up its regular season Saturday afternoon with a loss to Gustavus, which is ranked eighth in the ITA Central Region.
The Bennies fell 9-0 to the Gusties, who wrap up the season undefeated in MIAC play. CSB is 9-7 overall and 5-5 in the MIAC with the quarterfinals of the MIAC Tournament set to be played Tuesday. The six-team tournament field will be announced Saturday evening. Heading into the day, the Bennies were sixth in the league just ahead of St. Scholastica.
"Gustavus played really well (Saturday), and showed why they are at the top of the MIAC," CSB head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We did a great job matching their competitiveness and hung right in every match."
At doubles,
Lily Fredericks and
Peyton Kopel fell 8-3 to the 10
th-ranked doubles team in the Central Region. They lost 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Jane Bodensteiner and
Sophia Jonas fell 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, and
Greta Nesbit and
Maria Bedford fell 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
Fredericks and Kopel both took on ranked opponents in singles play. Fredericks fell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Kopel lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Nesbit fell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, Bodensteiner lost 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4, Jonas fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and
Grace Lee lost 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
