ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team wrapped up its 2022 season in the MIAC Quarterfinals Tuesday evening in Minneapolis.
The sixth-seeded Bennies fell 5-1 to No. 3 St. Kate's at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Greta Nesbit picked up a win at No. 3 singles to get CSB on the board, but the Wildcats won at No. 2 singles to clinch the match and end it early.
"This group has so much to be proud of," CSB head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "I'm so grateful to be their coach, and they earned everything this season. We put CSB tennis on the map, and we don't plan on going anywhere soon."
All three doubles teams hung with the Wildcats, who move on to face No. 2 Carleton Thursday in the MIAC Semifinals.
Lily Fredericks and
Peyton Kopel fell 8-4 at No. 1 doubles, and
Maria Bedford and Nesbit lost by the same score at No. 3 doubles.
Jane Bodensteiner and
Sophia Jonas lost 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.
Nesbit beat her St. Kate's opponent 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to get the Bennies on the board, but the Wildcats had already won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Kopel came up just short in a 6-1, 6-4 loss at No. 2 singles to end the match. The No. 4-6 singles matches were left unfinished since St. Kate's had already clinched the win.
The Bennies wrap up the season 9-9 overall and in sixth in the league with a 5-5 mark. The MIAC Quarterfinal appearance marked the team's first trip to the conference tournament since 2015.
