SARTELL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team took a step towards securing its first MIAC Tournament berth since 2015 Friday night when it swept Hamline in a MIAC match in Sartell.
The Pipers (2-17, 0-10) had open spots at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles, and the Bennies won both doubles matches and all five singles matches that were played. With one match left in the regular season, CSB is now 9-7 overall and 5-4 and in sixth in the MIAC – just ahead of St. Scholastica, which is 4-5 in the league after a loss to St. Kate's Friday.
"We played efficient tennis (Friday), and everyone took care of business," CSB coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We gave ourselves a good shot at playoffs, and itw ill be fun to see how the weekend plays out."
Hamline pushed in doubles play, but the Bennies held strong for the win.
Lily Fredericks and
Peyton Kopel came away with an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles and
Jane Bodensteiner and
Sophia Jonas teamed up to win 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Fredericks won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Kopel picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles.
Greta Nesbit lost her first set 6-4, but came back to win the next two 7-5 and 10-5 to come away with the win at No. 3 singles. Bodensteiner won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Jonas won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
The Bennies wrap up the regular season at noon Saturday, April 30, when they host regionally ranked Gustavus starting at noon at Sta-Fit in Sartell. The MIAC Tournament starts with quarterfinal play Tuesday, May 3. CSB hasn't been to the MIAC Tournament since 2015.
