Bennies take home team title at Carleton Relays

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict track and field team won two events and finished the day with 14 top-three finishes Saturday and came away with the team title at the Carleton Relays in Northfield.
 
The Bennies scored 162 team points to edge Gustavus, which finished second with 160 points. Host-school Carleton took third with 137.5 points. The 100, 200 and 100 hurdle results were not available Saturday night. All three races were run in the opposite direction and will no tbe in contention for national rankings.
 
Maggie Mahota, Tracy Renier and Fiona Smith picked up wins to pace the Bennies. Smith won the 1,500 and set the school record with a time of 4:34.06. That marked a personal-best time of two-tenths of a second and beat the previous school record – set in 2016 by Allison Kosobud – by one-tenth of a second.
 
Mahota won the 400 hurdles in 72.26 seconds and Renier won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:44.25. That time was more than 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
 
Smith also took second in the 800 in 2:24.24 in her first time competing in the event this season. Saint Benedict went 2-3 in the 400 as Sidela Nyuga took second in 61.81 seconds and Mirijana Ganley finished third in 63.39 seconds – both personal-best times. Elizabeth Selisker took second in the 400 hurdles behind Mahota in 73.86 seconds.
 
Stephanie Pickthorn took second in the triple jump with a mark of 10.38 meters in her first time competing in the event this season and Danielle Anderson took third with a mark of 9.41 meters. Maggie Beckmann finished second in the discus with a mark of 38.32 meters – just shy of her personal best – and Molly Vaughan took second in the pole vault with a mark of 3.11 meters.
 
Bridget Tetmeyer finished third in the 5K in 19:05.32, Justus Floren took third in the long jump with a mark of 4.93 meters and Nyuga, Emerson Knapp, Ganley and Mahota teamed up to finish third in the 1,600-meter relay in 4:20.47.
 
The Bennies compete at two different meets next weekend as the regular season winds down. Smith is headed to the Drake Relays to compete in the 5K and the rest of the team heads to Macalester for the Macalester Invite Saturday, April 30.
