WINONA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team took on its third Division II opponent of the season Sunday morning, and came up just short in a hard-fought 5-2 loss to Upper Iowa University at the Winona Tennis Center in Winona, Minn.
The two teams played by Division II rules, so Upper Iowa (4-3) got the doubles point after winning at No. 1 and 2 doubles.
Greta Nesbit and
Maria Bedford teamed up to win 6-3 at No. 3 doubles.
Ashley Tarrolly and
Lily Fredericks fell 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and
Peyton Kopel and
Jane Bodensteiner lost 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.
Nesbit and
Grace Lee both picked up wins in singles play. Nesbit won the first set 6-0 and was winning 5-1 before her opponent retired at No. 4 singles, and Lee picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles.
Tarrolly fell 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Fredericks won her first set 6-3, but fell 6-3, 6-3 in the next two at No. 2 singles. Kopel fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and Bodensteiner lost 4-6, 6-2, 11-9 at No. 5 singles.
The Bennies open up MIAC play Saturday, Feb. 19, when they host Concordia at 4:30 p.m. at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
