SARTELL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team got MIAC play started on the right foot Saturday evening with an 8-1 win over Concordia at Sta-Fit in Sartell.
The win marked the fifth of the season for the Bennies, who are 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the league.
"It feels good to put the first MIAC match in the win column," head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "We had a great day overall and created some needed momentum going into Saint Mary's next weekend."
CSB swept doubles play to take a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Ashley Tarrolly and
Peyton Kopel teamed up to win 8-1 at No. 1 doubles and
Jane Bodensteiner and
Grace Lee teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles.
Maria Bedford and
Greta Nesbit wrapped up doubles play with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.
Three of the singles matches went to extra sets, and the Bennies came away winners of two of those extra-set matches. Tarrolly won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and Kopel picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Nesbit fought back from a 6-3 loss in the first set to win 6-3, 10-1 and pick up the win.
Bodensteiner won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, and each of the last two singles matches went extra sets. Lee won her first set 6-4, but lost at No. 5 singles after losing 6-2, 13-11. Bedford picked up the final win of the day for CSB at No. 6 singles, winning 6-2, 6-7(2-7) and 10-2.
The Bennies return to action Saturday, Feb. 26, when they head to Winona for a 12:30 p.m. match against Saint Mary's.
