ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – In its home opener, the College of Saint Benedict (2-1, 1-1 MIAC) dropped a 64-47 MIAC decision to Gustavus Adolphus (4-0, 2-0 MIAC) on Tuesday at Claire Lynch Hall.
In the setback, CSB dropped to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play. Gustavus leads the MIAC with a 4-0 overall mark an 2-0 league record.
CSB was led in scoring by junior guard
Carla Meyer who had 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Meyer, who was named All-MIAC a year ago, has scored in double-digit points in 23 of the past 26 games and has 31 overall. She hit 4-of-11 from three-point range to lead CSB. With the 14 points, she is approaching 500 career points at 491. She also has 78 career three-pointers.
Overall, the Bennies had struggles shooting from the field as they hit just 25.4 percent on 15-of-59 shooting, including 5-of-27 in the second half. CSB was 4-of-25 from three-point range for 16 percent but knocked down 13-of-18 free throws for 72.2 percent.
St. Ben's, which will travel to the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn., for a 7 pm game on Wednesday, Nov. 30, trailed just 17-15 after the first quarter before Gustavus had a 21-13 margin in the second to take a 38-28 lead to halftime. CSB was outscored, 20-10 in the third quarter as the Gusties built a 58-to-38 lead. The Bennies outscored Gustavus, 9-to-6 in the fourth quarter but it was not enough.
Aside from Meyer, CSB had a solid contribution from
Lydia Hay who had eight points and six rebounds along with a blocked shot.
Tori Szathmary led CSB with nine rebounds, although Gustavus held a 53-to-38 margin on the boards.
The Gusties control on the glass provided a 15-to-2 advantage in second chance points. Both teams had 15 points off turnovers but CSB lost the scoring in the paint battle, 24-to-20, and Gustavus had a 13-to-1 edge in fast break points. In a game with four lead changes and six times, the Gusties used their 30-to-14 margin in bench points to help build the lead.
Gustavus, which had 17 points from Morgan Kelly, did not shoot particularly well as both defenses played strong. The Gusties made just 22-of-63 shots for 34.9 percent and hit 4-of-18 for 22.2 percent from three-point range. They had a slight edge in free throws by knocking down 16-of-21 for 76.2 percent
