DULUTH, Minn. – Despite an early goal from Aurora Opsahl, the College of Saint Benedict (3-4, 2-1 MIAC) dropped a 4-1 decision to St. Scholastica (1-4-1, 1-2 MIAC) on Friday.
The Bennies had a three-game winning streak come to an end in the road contest. CSB and St. Scholastica will play again on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Ritsche Arena in St. Cloud, Minn.
With her team-leading fifth goal of the season, Opsahl gave CSB a 1-0 lead 28 seconds in the match (19:32). For Opsahl, it was her eighth career goal. On the score, Ava Stinnett and Addy Hackley provided assists. The Bennies recorded 10 shots and had a 8-to-2 shots on goal margin in the opening period. It was the fifth straight period that CSB had held an opponent without a score as senior goalie Ally Frantzick recorded a pair of saves in facing five shots.
However, the momentum shifted in period two as the Saints scored twice before adding two power play goals in the third period to earn their first win of the season.
At 3:10 of the second period, CSS tied the score after Jessie Ketola had a goal on a shot on the right side of the net. Gabby Gamst added a second goal off an assist from Ketola for a 2-1 lead at 12:40 of the period.
In the third period, the Saints took advantage of power play situations to add to their lead. First, the Saints had a power play goal by Allie Bussey with assists by Hanley Block and Kayla Kasel at the 2:02 mark for a 3-1 lead. At 12:40, Halle Field also had a power play goal with assists from Murray Taylor and Hannah Martin.
CSB had a major shot advantage for the seventh straight game. They outshot the Saints, 33-to-18. Frantzick stopped two shots in the opening period and seven in the second and five in the third for 14 saves. St. Scholastica goalie Ashlea Arvidson allowed just one goal in facing 32 shots. CSB also lost the face off battle, 35-to-26.
