Big runs not enough for Bennies in loss to Royals

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team played with a never-say-die attitude Wednesday night in its MIAC match with 21st-ranked Bethel University.

Down 18-10 in the first set, the Bennies rallied back to tie the score at 19-19 before eventually falling. After a tough second set, CSB came out hot and took a big lead on the Royals before losing another tight set as Bethel picked up the 3-0 win in Claire Lynch Hall. Bethel (13-3, 2-0) held on for the win by scores of 25-22, 25-16 and 25-22.

In the first set, Bethel used a 4-0 run and then a 6-0 run to take an 18-10 lead on Saint Benedict. The Bennies bounced right back, however, and scored nine of the next 10 points to tie the set at 19-19. McKenzie Galvin had a pair of kills and Madelyn Gregory had two blocks and a kill as part of the run. The Royals scored the next two points, but a kill from Emma Guest kept CSB in it at 21-20. A kill from Gabby Heying made it a one-point set again at 23-22, but the Royals scored the final two points to hold on for the win.

The second set was close to start thanks to a pair of kills from Heying and a kill from Grace Holm. A 6-2 run put the Royals up 16-11, and Bethel ended the set on a 6-1 run. The Bennies had just eight kills in the second set.

Saint Benedict (2-9, 0-2) doubled its kill total from the second set in the third and final set. Heying had a trio of early kills and Holm had a big block to help the Bennies jump to a 6-1 lead, and kills from Holm and Galvin pushed that lead to 8-3. Bethel responded with a 6-0 run to go up 9-8, but the Bennies scored five of the next six points to take a 13-10 lead thanks to kills from Guest and Heying.

The teams traded runs, but the Royals went on a 5-1 run to go up 22-19 and CSB was never able to recover. Galvin, Gregory and Guest had big kills, but Bethel held on to win the set and the match.

Heying led CSB with 12 kills, Galvin added seven and Guest and Holm each added five. Payton Marker had 17 assists and Audrey Spolidoro had 12, and Mary Wenisch led the defense with 19 digs. Heying also added 13 digs for CSB.

Kirstin Cotter paced Bethel with 17 kills, Hannah Wilhite had 34 assists and Kelsie Sealock had a team-high 18 digs.

The Bennies are back in action and back at home Saturday, Oct. 2, when they host St. Scholastica at 7 p.m.
