ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a very tough nationally nonconference schedule full of nationally ranked opponents to start off the 2021 season, the College of Saint Benedict volleyball team begins MIAC play this week as it takes on the Hamline University Pipers at home on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Fans are welcome in Claire Lynch Hall but must be masked at all times except when eating. Live stats and video for the match are available here.
About the Pipers
The Pipers are 7-4 overall so far this season. Their last games were in the UW-La Crosse Tournament where they ended the tournament 1-3, and their last game of the tournament was a loss to tournament host UW-La Crosse. Senior Sydney Larson leads the team with 126 kills and alongside her is graduate student Megan Rubbelke with 349 assists. First year Jenna Rubbelke leads the team's defense with 163 digs.
Last Meeting
The last matchup between these two teams was back in October of 2019, almost two years ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic shortening last year's season. CSB would take a 3-2 victory over the Pipers in five back-and-forth sets. Gabby Heying had 10 blocks and Mary Wenisch had three service aces during this last meeting.
The Storyline
CSB volleyball is looking to make some moves in MIAC play after a tough loss to 18th-ranked Northwestern last week. Heying led the offense with eight kills in that match, which saw the Bennies tie the match 1-1 after a big second-set win. Audrey Spolidoro had 15 assists and Mackenzie McDonald helped defensively with 28 digs. Each of the eight teams the Bennies have already played have been nationally ranked or mentioned in the AVCA poll, so CSB hopes that big-game experience translates into MIAC wins.
Who to Watch
Heying still leads the Bennies offensively with 118 kills. Payton Marker leads the team in assists with 151, and Spolidoro is still following right behind with 125 assists. Wenisch leads the defensive side with 118 digs, with McDonald trailing just behind her with 90 digs.
