Waters’ big day preserves shutout for CSB soccer

PELLA, Iowa – For the second straight game, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team played 110 minutes of soccer Sunday afternoon, and for the second straight game, first-year goalie Annie Waters came up big in the second half.

The Bennies and Central played to a 0-0 double overtime tie in a nonconference contest in Pella, Iowa, Sunday afternoon. Waters played the final 65 minutes of the game just one day after playing 65 minutes in a scoreless, double OT tie with Saint Mary's Saturday in Winona.

Junior keeper Paige Kahlmeyer made two saves in a scoreless first half for both teams, and Waters came in in the second half and made four saves in 45 minutes, including back-to-back saves in the 68th minute to keep Central (5-1-1) off the board.

Grace Navara had a shot on net late in regulation, but it was saved and the game went to overtime. Waters made three saves, and Chloe Miller put a shot on net late in the fist 10-minute overtime period, but neither team was able to score and another 10 minutes went on the clock. Clair Lehmann, Alli Voss and Miller all had shots on net in the final 10 minutes of play, but the game ended in a tie.

Waters finished with a career-high seven saves in the second half and two overtimes. Central outshot the Bennies 24-13, and CSB had seven shots on net to the Dutch's nine. Miller and Navara both finished with two shots on net.

The Bennies are back at home and return to MIAC play Saturday, Sept. 25, when they host Gustavus at 3:30 p.m. at the OAC.
