Fourth-quarter rally not enough in loss to Scots

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict scored more points in the fourth quarter than it had the first three combined Saturday afternoon as the Bennies tried to climb back into the game against Macalester, but the comeback fell short as the Bennies lost 62-57 in St. Paul.

After hitting just two field goals in the third, the Bennies (6-2, 3-2) shot 50 percent from the field in the fourth and outscored the Scots (5-4, 3-3) 30-24. CSB started the fourth on an 11-2 run capped off with a three-point play from Madison Doran to make it a two-point game, 40-38, with 7:25 left to play. The Scots responded with an 8-2 run before a pair of free throws from Doran and a three from Lydia Hay made it a four-point game, 50-46, with just over four minutes remaining.

But the Scots took advantage of opportunities at the line and went 10-for-12 from the line in the final three minutes of the game to hang on for the win.

A three from Hay started the game for the Bennies, and Gabby Martin scored twice to put CSB up 7-0 in a low-scoring first quarter that saw Saint Benedict take an 11-7 lead into the second. The two teams exchanged the lead several times in the second, and a pair of free throws from Kate Seyer got the Bennies within one, 22-21, at halftime.

A pair of baskets from Doran put the Bennies up 25-22 early in the third, but CSB only scored two more points in the final eight minutes of the quarter and Macalester led by 11, 38-27, heading into the fourth.

Doran finished with a game-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the field to lead the Bennies, who shot 30 percent as a team. Hay added 14 points and four rebounds and Martin finished with 14 points. CSB went 19-for-26 from the line and had 33 rebounds and 14 turnovers.

Peyton Starks led the Scots with 15 points and three other players scored 10 points, including Emma LaFrenz, who had 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Scots shot 34 percent from the field, went 21-for-26 from the line and had 50 rebounds and 21 turnovers.

CSB plays once more in 2021 when it hosts Carleton at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15, in Claire Lynch.
