ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team is looking to keep up its offensive streak along with its solid defense as the team heads to St. Paul for a road matchup against Macalester on Saturday, Oct. 23, with a 3:30 p.m. start time.
About the Scots
Macalester is 10-3-2 overall, 4-3-1 in the MIAC and is also looking to keep their three-game win streak going much like the Bennies are. MAC had a 2-0 nonconference victory over Grinnell on Tuesday evening. Alice Bieda leads the Scots with six goals and goalkeeper Dana Gustafson has 73 saves and a 0.57 goals-against average.
Last Meeting
The last time these two teams met was back on September 28, 2019, where they ended deadlocked in a 0-0 draw after double overtime. The Bennies outshot the Scots 30-9, with a shots on net margin of 12-4, but solid defense wouldn't allow the Bennies to score.
The Storyline
A late first-half goal from Abby Willenbring and second-half goals from Roxy Veldman and Lana Krautkremer gave the Bennies a 3-0 shutout win over Hamline Saturday, lifting them to third place in the MIAC standings. Saint Benedict has now had eight shutouts this season.
With just three games left in the regular season, the Bennies look to stay strong on both sides of the ball to ensure they stay in that top third of the conference standings as the top six teams make the league's postseason tournament.
Who to Watch
Roxy Veldman is on an offensive hot streak, scoring three goals in her last two games. Ella Young, Olivia Miller, and Abby Willenbring continue to lead in minutes on the back line, keeping the defense strong for the Bennies. Keepers Annie Waters and Paige Kahlmeyer
both remain in the top six in the MIAC in goals-against average and combined for four saves against Hamline on Saturday.
