Soccer Falls at Carleton in MIAC Playoff Semifinal

Bennies end season at 12-2-4

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The College of Saint Benedict soccer team saw its season end in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoff Semifinals, as the Bennies fell 2-1 Thursday, Nov. 5. Saint Benedict finishes off its impressive season with an overall record in 12-2-4, the most wins since 2022, and made its first appearance in the MIAC Playoffs since 2023.

Saint Benedict's lone goal of the game came off a boot from junior Gabby Fernholz (Rice, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice), while first-year Ella Verkinderen (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) added an assist.

Senior Rhianna Anya (Bloomington, Minn./Thomas Jefferson Sr.) made six saves in goal spanning all 90 minutes.

First-year Eva Gower (Plymouth, Minn./Orono) nearly put the Bennies on the board first. Maneuvering to get a clean shot off from outside the penalty box, the first-year booted a ball just too high, as it landed on top of the goal in the 12th minute.

Carleton (13-1-2) quickly made its way down the pitch in response, putting a ball on frame. Anya came up clutch to keep it scoreless through 13 minutes, as she perfectly timed the shot to push it up and out of play.

The Knights used the ensuing corner kick to their advantage, as a rebounded shot through traffic gave the home team a 1-nil lead 13:19 into action.

CC tacked on one more to go up 2-nil in the 34th minute.

Saint Benedict regrouped after the score, putting pressure on the Knights for the final 10 minutes of the first half.

With less than two minutes to play in the opening half, Verkinderen sent a cross towards the box for the Bennies. The ball found its way to Fernholz, who booted a tight shot into the right pocket of the goal to cut the deficit in half. The score looked to swing some momentum back towards CSB entering the break.

Making quick work of the Carleton defense to start the second half, sophomore Elly Prairie (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) registered a shot on target, but Carleton's Avery Trapp hauled in the save just over a minute in.

Anya responded with a stop of her own two minutes later to keep Saint Benedict within reach.

At the 78-minute mark, sophomore Allison Cammerrer (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) nearly tied the contest at two, but a great save by Trapp kept Carleton in front.

The Knights were awarded a penalty kick a minute later due to a handball in the box, but the attempt sailed wide to keep the game within reach.

Saint Ben's could not find the equalizier, ultimately falling 2-1. With the loss, the careers of Anya, seniors Avery Soli (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine), Anna Jones (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) and Olivia Smith (Rogers, Minn./Rogers).
