ST. CLOUD, Minn. –
Mollie Wise's late goal Friday night not only lifted the College of Saint Benedict hockey team to a 1-0 win over Saint Mary's, it also left the Bennies in a position to accomplish something the program hasn't done since 2000.
Wise scored with less than three minutes left to play Friday to break a scoreless tie, and the Bennies held on for the win over the Cardinals in the team's final series of the season. That win pushed CSB's record to 11-11-1 overall and 6-11 in the MIAC. If CSB can complete the sweep Saturday afternoon, that would mark the first time since 2000 the team has finished above .500.
Six conference wins also marks the most for the team since finishing 6-10-2 in 2014-15. The team hasn't won seven or more MIAC games since 2004-05.
After an even first period that saw CSB finish with 10 shots on net and Saint Mary's (8-13-2, 5-10-2) finish with nine, the Cardinals picked things up in the second. SMU outshot the Bennies 19-10 in the second period, but first year goalie
Ally Frantzick stopped all 19 shots for Saint Benedict to keep the game scoreless after 40 minutes of play.
In the third period, the Bennies flipped the script and came out hot, outshooting the Cardinals 18-6. SMU's goalie had some big saves in the period, including five in a short span from
Emily Lemker, Wise,
Annika Brodt and
Maria Wallace, and she also had a flurry of saves midway through the period.
Wise final got one into the back of Saint Mary's net at the 17:12 mark of the third off an assist from
Julia Pias. The goal marked the 14
th of the season for Wise – which is one goal shy of matching her career total from her first three seasons. Pias has a career-high 11 assists following Friday's game.
The Bennies finished with 39 shots on net to the Cardinals' 34. Frantzick finished with 34 saves to pick up the fifth win of her CSB career and her third shutout. This marks the fifth shutout of the season for Saint Benedict.
CSB has the chance to pick up its third sweep of the season and second MIAC sweep of the year Saturday when it wraps up the season with a 2 p.m. game against the Cardinals. The team will celebrate its three seniors –
Erica Borrell,
Courtney Conlin and Wise – between the first and second periods.
