01/25/2020

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Mikayla Von Wahlde and Emily Quill both picked up a pair of wins Saturday afternoon in the College of Saint Benedict swim and dive team's dual meet with Gustavus. The swimmers competed in Collegeville and the divers competed in an invite-style meet in St. Peter. The Gusties won the dual 181-104.

Not only did Quill sweep the diving competitions in St. Peter, she also set the second school record of her career. In the first 11-dive meet of her collegiate career, Quill broke the school record by more than 20 points with a score of 443.65. The previous record of 423.20 was set by Artie Pomerenke in 2017. Quill also won the three-meter competition with a score of 428.00, which is just 15 points shy of the school record and currently fourth in program history.

Pomerenke also had a solid day as they took third on the one-meter board with a national qualifying mark of 401.85. Pomerenke needs to record a second qualifying mark to earn a spot at the Central Zone Regional in March, and if they do, it will be the first time since 1999 that more than one CSB swimmer or diver qualified for the postseason. First year Mia Sabin took sixth on the one-meter board with a score of 383.10, the eighth-best score in CSB history, and fourth in the three-meter competition with a score of 390.26, the ninth-best score in program history.

Von Wahlde swept the backstroke races, winning the 100 back in 1:01.23 and the 200 backstroke in 2:12.83. First year Molly Johanson picked up a win in the 400 IM with a time of 4:52.55 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Thea Oman, Madison Slavik, Zoe Allyson and Claudia Mahoney won in 1:44.02.

Brenna Sharp took second in the 100 butterfly in 1:05.10, and Izzy Sonday finished second in the 1,650 freestyle in 19:55.69. Morgan Gerhardt took third in the same race in 20:20.80. Mahoney took third in the 200 free (2:03.75), Slavik finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:03.47) and Oman finished took third in the 100 free in 57.36 seconds. Ana Birklid finished third in the 50 free in 25.88 seconds, and Von Wahlde, Johanson, Jessica Milstroh and Oman took third in the 200 medley relay in 1:54.92.

CSB's swimmers are back in action Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at the Minnesota Challenge, and the divers stay close to home Saturday, Feb. 1, for the St. Cloud State Diving Invite.
