CSB starts MIAC play at Concordia

09/17/2019

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After a tough nonconference schedule to start the 2019 season, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team looks to translate that early season success and games against tough opponents into wins in the MIAC season. CSB kicks off MIAC play Tuesday, Sept. 17, when it travels to Moorhead to take on Concordia.

About the Cobbers
Concordia also found success in the nonconference portion of its schedule, and heads into Tuesday's game undefeated at 5-0. The Cobbers have outscored opponents 19-2, including a 7-0 victory over Buena Vista on Saturday. Karsen Granning leads the team with seven goals, three assists and 17 points, and Klara Beinhorn and Kay Franzese both have three goals. Granning is tied for first in the MIAC in points and goals. In net Lexi Jemtrud is 5-0 with 10 saves to her name.

Last Meeting
CSB beat the Cobbers 3-0 on Sept. 12 of last year in a game played in St. Joseph. Sydney Sherek scored the eventual game-winner less than 20 minutes into the game, and Megan Thompson added a pair of goals to help ice the win. Kayli Thulin and Kendall Koenen split time in net and combined for three saves in the shutout.

The Storyline
Saint Benedict (3-2-1) played some tough competition early in the year and looks to use lessons learned against those opponents to find success in MIAC play. Both CSB and Concordia picked up some big wins in nonconference play, and both are looking to start conference play with a win.

Who to Watch
Junior Megan Thompson is on a tear so far this season. She leads the MIAC in goals (7) and points (17) and is tied for third with three assists. First year keeper Paige Kahlmeyer made seven saves to pick up the first win of her Saint Benedict career, a 3-1 victory over No. 19 Loras. Senior goalie Kendall Koenen has 21 saves and Kahlmeyer has 12.
