CSB completes weekend sweep with win over No. 17 Eagles

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – After an overtime win on Friday, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team wasn't leaving the fate of the game to the last second Saturday afternoon.

CSB wrapped up a big opening weekend of nonconference play with a 3-1 over No. 17 UW-La Crosse Saturday in St. Joseph. The win comes against a program that won the WIAC and made it to the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2018.

After a hat trick in Friday's win, junior Megan Thompson came out on fire again Saturday, and had at least a hand in all three of her team's goals. She assisted on the first goal of the game to put CSB up 1-0, and then added two more goals to her season total to help CSB to a 2-0 start on the year.

Saint Benedict got on the board in the 15th minute when Thompson sent a nice pass into the left side of the box to sophomore Roxy Veldman, who got ahead of the Eagles' defender and was able to send the ball into the back right corner of the net.

Despite being outshot 7-5 in the first half, CSB held a 1-0 lead going into halftime, and was able to extend their lead 10 minutes into the second half. Rosie McGinty sent a long pass into Thompson from the left side of the field, and Thompson took the ball and sent it into the net past La Crosse's goalie.

The Eagles (1-1) made it a one-goal game in the 62nd minute, but Thompson sealed the game with just over 10 minute to play when she took a pass from Maren Noble and sent the ball below the keeper into the right side of the net. In the first two games of the season, Thompson has 11 points on five goals and one assist.

La Crosse finished with 15 total shots to CSB's eight, and held an 8-4 edge in shots on net, but CSB senior goalie Kendall Koenen made seven saves to help her team pick up a big win over a ranked team.

CSB is off now until Saturday, Sept. 7, when it heads to Iowa for a pair of big regional games. The team takes on Wartburg Saturday in Waverly, then heads to Decorah Sunday for a 3 p.m. game against Luther. CSB is back at home Friday, Sept. 13, when it hosts Loras – another perennially strong team – at 3 p.m.
