CSB hockey kicks off 2020 in Wisconsin

12/16/2019

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team is rested and ready to play after a month off. The team kicks off 2020 and the second half of its 2019-20 schedule Jan. 3-4 with a nonconference doubleheader against Concordia-Wisconsin.

The two teams play at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3, and against at noon Saturday, Jan. 4, in Mequon, Wis.

About the Falcons
CUW has had more than a month off, as the Falcons' last game of 2019 was a home doubleheader against Marian Nov. 22-23. CUW won the first game 2-1, and the two teams tied 0-0 in overtime in the second game of the series to leave the Falcons with a 2-5-1 overall record heading into 2020. Concordia started the year with four straight losses, but split with Trine before picking up a win and a tie against Marian. Eight different players have a single goal for the Falcons, and Issy Bilton leads the team with two assists. Breanna Thomson leads the team in net with 192 saves and a 2.65 goals-against average.

Last Meeting
The Falcons beat CSB in the only meeting between the two teams in both 2017 and 2018. CSB's last win against Concordia was a 2-1 victory in December 2016 in St. Cloud. Rylan Bistodeau scored for CSB in the 2018 game off assists from Julia Pias and Bre Hess to make it a 1-1 game before the Falcons took a 4-1 lead. Concordia had 39 shots on net to CSB's 30.

The Storyline
Saint Benedict ended the 2019 portion of its schedule on a high note, beating St. Kate's 3-0 in a MIAC contest in St. Cloud. The win pushed the team's overall record to .500 at 4-4, and marked Saint Benedict's second conference win of the season. CSB – which outshot the Wildcats 34-24 – looks to use that momentum to get 2020 off to a solid start, and looks to keep up the offensive numbers as the team gets deeper into the season.

Who to Watch
Sophie Stoffers, Myka Stave and Mollie Wise all scored third-period goals for CSB in the win over St. Kate's. That marked the first goal of Stoffers' CSB career. Wise leads the team with seven points on five goals and two assists, and both Annika Brodt and Rylan Bistodeau have three goals. Stave, Courtney Conlin and Pias all have three assists. In net, Maggie Gilchrist leads the team with two wins and 121 saves.
