ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Saturday's win in its regular-season finale against Carleton was a big one for many reasons for the College of Saint Benedict soccer team.
The win ensured the team would finish in the top four in the MIAC, sealed home-field advantage for the first round of the MIAC playoffs and
Megan Thompson set a school record.
Thompson scored both of her team's goals as Saint Benedict beat Carleton 2-0 to earn the No. 4 seed in the six-team MIAC Tournament. Her two goals also moved her up into first on the school's single-season goals list with 17 so far in 2019. The previous record was 16, set first in 1993 by Marie Plaskett and tied in 2003 by Megan McVoy. Thompson also moved up into fifth on the school's career goals list with 32 in three seasons. The record is 49, set by Sharon Welle '93.
Heading into Saturday's game, CSB (10-5-2, 7-3-1) was in fifth and a point behind Carleton (9-4-3, 6-3-2) in the MIAC standings. The win boosted CSB up into fourth and pushed the Knights down into fifth. That means Carleton heads back to St. Joseph Tuesday, Nov. 5, for the first round of the MIAC Tournament. That quarterfinal game is set to start at 2 p.m. on the CSB soccer field.
After a quiet first half – the Knights had four shots, none on net, and Saint Benedict had just two shots – both on net – Thompson got the second half started with a bang, scoring her first goal of the game and 16
th of the season at the 46:13 mark. That goal, which tied the school record, came off an assist from
Sydney Sherek. It also marked Thompson's eighth game-winning goal of 2019.
Thompson put two more shots on net, and Saint Benedict had several wide shots, but neither team scored again until the 77
th minute when Thompson broke the school record. After
Clair Lehmann had a shot on net that was saved, she got the ball back after the free kick and sent it down the center of the field to Thompson, who kicked it low past the Carleton keeper and into the left side of the net.
Saint Benedict finished with 10 shots to Carleton's five, and had nine shots on net. Koenen picked up her fourth complete-game shutout of the season, which is two away from her career-best six shutouts in a season in 2017.
CSB tries for its third straight win against the Knights and fifth in the last six contests Tuesday in the first round of the MIAC Tournament. Augsburg clinched the No. 1 seed and St. Thomas is No. 2, and both have byes Tuesday. St. Kate's earned the No. 3 seed and hosts No. 6 Bethel Tuesday.
