MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team's offense did everything in its power to try and remain unbeaten in MIAC play Tuesday night, but it wasn't quite enough.
Saint Benedict put up double-digit shots, and more than tripled the Augsburg's shots-on-net total, but a single goal in the first half ended up being enough as the Auggies snuck away with a 1-0 win in Minneapolis. The loss marked the first MIAC loss of 2019 for CSB, which is now 7-3-2 overall and 4-1-1 and in a tie for fourth in the MIAC with just a handful of games left in the regular season.
CSB got off to a fast start Tuesday, as
Mara Flaherty put a shot on net in the first five minutes of play.
Maren Noble and Flaherty put back-to-back shots on net within 40 seconds of each other in the 21
st minute, and
Rosie McGinty put two straight on net in the 31
st minute, but Augsburg keeper Emily Chapman stopped them all.
The Auggies scored the first – and only – goal of the game a few minutes later when Ashley St. Aubin scored her league-leading 13
th goal of the season at the 38:31 mark. Augsburg put another shot on net a few minutes later, but
Kendall Koenen made the save for CSB.
The Auggies had several shots that went wide to start the second half, and
Megan Thompson put a shot on net in the first 11 minutes of the half.
Clair Lehmann had a shot off a corner kick that went wide, and
Abby Welsch had a shot on net a short time later, but Chapman made another save. Thompson put up one last shot on net in the 78
th minute, and she had two shots that went wide in the final 10 minutes of play, but CSB could never find the back of the net.
Augsburg (10-2-1, 6-0-1) held a 17-14 edge over CSB in total shots, but the Bennies had eight shots on net to the Auggies' two. Thompson, McGinty and Flaherty all had a pair of shots on net for CSB. Chapman made eight saves to preserve the shutout for the Auggies, and Koenen made one save.
CSB returns home Sunday, Oct. 20, for another key MIAC matchup as it hosts St. Olaf at 3:30 p.m. The two teams head into the game in a three-way tie for fourth with St. Thomas with 13 points in the conference standings. The Auggies lead the league, St. Kate's is second and Carleton is third.
