ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team started its weekend with a win Friday evening when it beat Hamline University 3-1 in a MIAC match in St. Paul, Minn.
The win – which marks the fourth straight for CSB – pushes CSB's overall record to 11-4 and its MIAC record to 3-0. Saint Benedict won 25-13, 25-21, 20-25 and 25-16 Friday night as the Pipers fell to 6-6 overall and 0-3 in the league.
Set one was all CSB, as the team led 18-8 before pushing ahead for the win. Hamline hung with CSB in set two, and kept things close up through 20-19, but a trio of kills from
Madison Weiss and several Piper attack errors helped CSB pull away for the win.
The Pipers led early in set three, and led 13-10 before kills by Weiss and
Liz Schultz and a block by Madison and
Hunter Weiss tied things up at 13-13. The two teams went back and forth, and the set was tied 19-19, but the Pipers used several CSB attack errors and a service ace, and later a pair of kills to hold on for the win to take the set.
Saint Benedict came out strong in set four with several early kills from
Hunter Weiss, and a block from Hunter put CSB up 13-6. Another kill from Hunter made it 16-9, and Saint Benedict held on for the eventual win.
Hunter Weiss finished with 14 kills and five total blocks to pace CSB, which had nine total blocks and hit .301 on the night.
Madison Weiss and
Claire Westby each added 10 kills and
Lauren Mathews finished with nine.
Katie Koch had 46 assists, and
Haley LaValle led the defense with 18 digs. Schultz and Koch each added 13.
Morgen Coleman led Hamline – which hit .148 – with 12 kills. Megan Rubbelke had 40 assists and Erin Tadych had 12 digs.
CSB is on the road Saturday, Sept. 22, for a pair of games in Decorah, Iowa. The team takes on Loras at noon and Luther at 2 p.m.
