CSB soccer hosts Concordia in 2018 MIAC opener

| By:
ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team picked up its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, and it looks to carry that momentum into the start of the MIAC season Wednesday when it hosts Concordia in both team's MIAC opener. The conference match starts at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the CSB soccer field.

About the Cobbers
Concordia is off to a solid start with a 3-1 record. The Cobbers have outscored opponents 16-2 so far this season, including a 9-0 win at Morris on Sunday. Six different players scored for Concordia, and Karsen Granning had a hat trick. All three of the team's wins have been shutouts. Kalli Baarstad leads the team with four goals, and Maddy Reed has been solid in net, giving up just two goals for a 0.50 goals-against average in four games played.

Last Meeting
Saint Benedict held on for a 1-0 win at Concordia when the two teams met last season in Moorhead. Megan Thompson scored the lone goal of the game in the 12th minute to help keep her team undefeated at 4-0 early in the 2017 season. Kendall Koenen made one save to preserve the shutout, and CSB held a 10-1 edge in shots on net over the Cobbers.

The Storyline
CSB picked up its first win of the season in dramatic fashion Saturday, beating Wartburg 3-2 in overtime thanks to a goal in the final two minutes of OT. Saint Benedict looks to use that win to pick up momentum heading into a three-match week that includes a road game against St. Thomas and a home match against UW-Eau Claire.

Who to Watch
First year Clara Noack made a splash Saturday to help her team pick up a big nonconference win. She scored the first two goals of her career, including the game-winner in overtime. Sophomore Laurel Poole also picked a good time for the first goal of her career, as she scored midway through the second half to put CSB up 2-1. Kendall Koenen made a career-high 12 saves in the win.
