ATLANTA, Ga. – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team is headed back to Minnesota with a 3-1 record after adding a pair of wins to its resume Saturday afternoon.
CSB swept two opponents in the second and final day of the Emory Tournament in Atlanta, Ga. Saint Benedict started its day with a 3-0 sweep of Maryville (Tenn.) Saturday morning, and wrapped up the tournament with another sweep, this one against Whittier. Over the course of the weekend, CSB swept three opponents and took its fourth opponent to five sets in the team's lone loss. Sophomore
Madison Weiss earned a spot on the all-tournament team for her play throughout the weekend.
Saint Benedict made quick work of Maryville (0-2) Saturday morning, winning 25-14, 25-18 and 25-15. First year
Claire Westby led the team with nine kills and senior
Lauren Mathews added seven.
Hunter Weiss had five kills and five block assists, and
Katie Koch added 23 assists to her weekend total. Defensively,
Haley LaValle had a team-high 14 digs and
Bridget McDonald finished with 10.
CSB jumped to a 9-2 lead against Whitter (1-3) Saturday afternoon, and led by as many as 10 before Whitter went on a run. The Poets got within three at 23-20 before CSB pulled away for the 25-21 win in the first set. Saint Benedict won the second set 25-17, and completed the sweep with a 25-12 win in the third and final set.
Liz Schultz paced the team's offense with 10 kills, Mathews added nine and
Madison Weiss and
Hunter Weiss each added eight kills and eight block assists. Koch notched 30 assists, LaValle had 25 digs and Schultz (15) and
Mary Wenisch (12) also reached double-digits in digs.
Saint Benedict opens home play this week with a solo nonconference match Wednesday against UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m., and then Friday and Saturday when it hosts a home tournament. CSB hosts three games Friday evening in Claire Lynch and then five more Saturday morning and afternoon. The team plays at 3 and 7 p.m. Friday and 1 and 5 p.m. Saturday.
