Carle makes 50 saves in loss to Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Julia Carle made a season-high 50 saves Saturday afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the College of Saint Benedict hockey team fell 5-2 to Augsburg in Minneapolis.

Carle stopped at least 15 shots in each of the three periods Saturday afternoon to keep CSB in the game. CSB was within one goal heading into the final period at 3-2, but the Auggies scored two unanswered third-period goals to pull ahead.

Augsburg (12-6-3, 7-4-3) scored two goals in the first period to take a lead, including one with less than a minute to go in the period. CSB got within a goal just over a minute into the second period when Courtney Conlin scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from Kylie Eklund on the power play.

The Auggies made it 3-1 four minutes later, but Saint Benedict scored with 30 seconds left in the second when Rylan Bistodeau scored the second goal of her collegiate career to make it 3-2. Riley Schneider was credit with the assist.

The Auggies, however, added a goal in the 15th minute of the final period and one more in the 17th minute on the power play to seal the win.

Augsburg finished with 55 shots on net to CSB's 14. Carle's 50 saves fell just shy of her career-high, which is 54.

Saint Benedict is now 2-17-1 overall and 1-12-1 in the MIAC. CSB is on the road at St. Thomas Friday, Feb. 9, and hosts the Tommies at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.
