CSB hosts Augsburg as regular season winds down

ST.JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team is riding high after earning win No. 20 on Feb. 7, and is hoping to add win 21 to the docket when it hosts Augsburg for Parent/Senior Day on Feb. 10 at 3 p.m. in Claire Lynch Hall.
CSB is also celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day Saturday, and Carol Agnes – the first athletic director at CSB who won a Breaking Barriers Award Wednesday at the NGWSD celebration – will be honored at halftime.

About Augsburg
The Auggies enter the game with an overall record of 11-10, and a conference mark of 7-8. The team is looking to rebound after suffering a last-second 70-67 overtime loss to St. Thomas on Feb. 7 in St. Paul. St. Thomas hit a three as time expired to force the game into overtime, and then ended the game on a 6-0 run to ensure their victory. This is the second game in a row for the Auggies that was decided by a slim margin in the waning seconds of the game, as they lost 78-74 at Concordia on Feb. 3.
The Auggies have three players that are averaging over ten points per game, with sophomore Tamira McLemore leading the way with 13.9 ppg, followed by classmates Camryn Speese (10.9 ppg) and K'Aezha Wubben (10.2 ppg). Speese grabs an average of 5.2 rebounds per game, and McLemore has dished out 59 assists on the season. McLemore leads the way defensively as well for the Auggies, stealing 52 balls this season, while first year Jazmyn Solseth has made a name for herself on defense with her 15 blocks.

Back to January
Saturday will mark the season finale between Augsburg and Saint Benedict after the two teams met up Jan. 13 in Minneapolis. CSB took away a 14-point victory in that game, winning 59-45. Saint Benedict proved to be in control of the game from the get go leading the home team 15-6 after the first quarter and 25-19 at halftime. CSB shot 40 percent from the field and went 21-for-33 from the line in the win.

Who to Watch
While the senior class for CSB continues to pace the scoring, the outstanding underclassmen are beginning to make their mark. Sophomore Sidney Schiffler has put up over 10 points in four of the last six games, and leads the team in shooting percentage from beyond the arc, converting on 48 percent of her shots. Schiffler's classmate Alex Johnson has proved herself to be a force down low, grabbing 74 rebounds, while first year Maddie Schmitz has grabbed 65 in her first year.

The Storyline
The team will honor seniors Niki Fokken, Chelsey Guetter, and Kate Banovetz on Saturday for their memorable contributions to the CSB basketball program.

Fokken enters Senior Day just 78 points away from hitting 1,000 career points, sitting at 922 currently. Fokken has started 92 of the 95 games she's played in, and has shot 42 percent from the field in her career. She averaged 6.1 rebounds per game, for a total of 578 boards grabbed. She's dished out 75 assists, blocked 166 shots, and stolen 77 from opponents. Niki's impact on the scoresheet has been huge all four years, as she posted nearly 10 points per game her sophomore and junior seasons and is averaging 13 points per game in her senior campaign.
Chelsey Guetter has been a workhorse for CSB basketball in her four seasons, averaging over 30 minutes per game her entire career. She's shot 45 percent from the field and 29 percent from beyond the arch. She has the shooting percentage from the charity stripe of the seniors, knocking down nearly 62 percent of her attempts. Guetter has grabbed 518 rebounds, with her lowest four year average at an impressive 6.2 rebounds per game. She's put up 676 points in her four years, and averaged over ten points per game three of her four years.
Kate Banovetz has been a four-year staple for CSB playing in 96 games thus far in her career. She's shot .496 on her career from the field, and has converted 60 percent of the time from the charity stripe. Banovetz has been consistent under the basket as well, with a steady 4.3 rebounds per game average. She's dished out 87 assists, stolen 83, and blocked 80 opponent shots.
