Pias, Schneider score as CSB beats Oles

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – After playing a tough series against the No. 4 team in the country last weekend, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team bounced back Friday night with a 2-1 victory at St. Olaf.

The win marks the team's first MIAC victory of the year and second overall and pushes its record to 2-3 and 1-2. The Oles are now 0-5 and 0-3 in the conference.

Saint Benedict had two early shots on net, but it was St. Olaf that got on the board first Friday night in Northfield with a goal in the second minute of the game. But CSB was able to tie things up in the 13th minute when Julia Pias scored the first goal of her collegiate career at the 13:44 mark off assists from Annika Brodt and Riley Schneider.

Both CSB goalie Kailee Medved and the Oles' goalie had a handful of saves in the final minutes of the first period to keep the score tied at 1-1, and Medved had a save and Myka Stave got a blocked shot early in the second period.

Schneider had back-to-back shots on net in the sixth minute of the second period, and finally got the third one to go in to put her team up 2-1 at the 6:56 mark. She scored off an assist from Pias, and that lead held the remainder of the game.

Sophie Stoffers had back-to-back shots on goal a few minutes later, and the Oles had several chances late in the period, but Medved made four saves to keep her team on top.

Medved finished with 10 saves in the final period to help CSB hold on for the win – its second conference win in the last two seasons.

Saint Benedict finished with 21 shots on net to the Oles' 24. Schneider led the team with five shots on net and Brodt finished the night with four. Medved had 23 saves to pick up her second win of the year. CSB was only called for one penalty all night, early in the third period.

CSB and St. Olaf are back in action at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at the MAC in St. Cloud.
