ST. JOSEPH, Minn.- After a 10 game winning streak, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team suffered its first MIAC loss of the season at the hands of the Tommies last Saturday. CSB looks to begin another run when it hosts Hamline University on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. in Claire Lynch Hall.
About Hamline
The Pipers are currently 4-13 overall, and 3-7 in the conference. Last Saturday, they lost 80-68 to Saint Mary's. At the end of the 2016-17 season, Hamline was 5-20 overall, and 2-16 in MIAC play. Junior Alaina Quaranta tops her team with an average of 12.4 points per game and 210 total points. Trailing her is Reilly Geistfeld, who has scored a total of 189 points and averages 10.9 points per game.
Last Game
Shortly before Christmas break, Saint Benedict traveled to St. Paul to beat the Pipers 73-58 on their home court. CSB outscored Hamline in every quarter, holding the lead the entire game. Seniors
Chelsey Guetter and
Kate Banovetz scored 14 points apiece for Saint Benedict. Molly Wampler had 14 points for the Piper and. Kaeli Stayer made a strong 10 points for the Pipers.
Who to Watch
Continuing to lead Saint Benedict is the senior trio of
Niki Fokken,
Chelsey Guetter, and
Kate Banovetz. Fokken has 199 points, and averages 12.4 per game. Guetter has scored 165 points this season, and Banovetz follows with 109. First year
Maddie Schmitz trails Banovetz by only three points with a total of 106.
The Storyline
The 15-2 Saint Benedict squad looks to get back on an upward climb after a hard loss at home to St. Thomas last week. CSB held on valiantly, but ended up one the bottom of the 77-52 game. CSB – which is still receiving votes in the latest d3hoops.com poll – is ranked second in the MIAC with a 9-1 conference record. Saturday, CSB travels to St. Paul to face Bethel (12-5 overall, 7-3 conference) at 3 p.m.
