CSB stays hot in win over Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team continued its hot start to the 2017-18 season Saturday afternoon in a 59-45 win at Augsburg College.

CSB outscored the Auggies 15-6 in the first quarter, and doubled up Augsburg again in the third quarter en route to the win in Minneapolis.

The win marks the 14th of the season for Saint Benedict, which hasn't won more than 16 games in a season since 2012-13. CSB is now 14-1 overall and is tied for first in the MIAC with an 8-0 record. This is the best overall start for CSB since 2003-04 when it started 15-1, and the best conference start since 2008-09 when it also started 8-0.

Saturday's game started close as the Auggies (8-6, 4-4) tied the game 6-6 midway through the first quarter. From there, however, CSB finished the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 15-6 lead. Augsburg got within five midway through the second, and cut the gap to three, 22-19, with 2:16 left in the second quarter, but Sidney Schiffler hit a three six second before halftime to push CSB's lead to six, 25-19.

Niki Fokken scored to start the second half and Kate Banovetz hit a pair of free throws to push CSB's lead back to 10, 29-19, less than a minute into the third quarter, and Fokken later scored five straight points for CSB followed by a layup from Breanna Gates to make it 36-21 with 5:49 left in the third. Courtney Nelson hit a three, and a layup by Alex Johnson pushed CSB's lead to 21, 44-23, with 2:58 left in the quarter. Saint Benedict led 47-30 after three quarters.

The Auggies got within 12 midway through the final quarter, but Schiffler scored and Maddie Schmitz hit four free throws to help keep Augsburg at bay and seal the win.

Fokken finished with 15 points and seven rebounds to lead CSB and Schmitz and Chelsey Guetter each added 10 points. CSB shot 40 percent from the field and went 21-for-33 from the line. Saint Benedict had 47 rebounds and 19 turnovers.

K'Aezha Wubben paced Augsburg with 13 points and Camryn Speese and Jazmyn Solseth each had five rebounds. The Auggies shot 30 percent from the field and went 10-for-18 from the line. They had 24 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

CSB is on the road again Wednesday, Jan. 17, when it takes on Macalester in St. Paul. CSB returns home Saturday, Jan. 20, when it hosts No. 16 St. Thomas.
