ST. PAUL, Minn. – Everyone got in on the action Wednesday night for the College of Saint Benedict basketball team in its 66-38 win at Macalester. Sixteen different players saw time on the court and 11 different players scored for CSB, which pushed its current winning streak to 10 games.
Saint Benedict improved to 15-1 overall and 9-0 in the MIAC. CSB remains tied for first in the league standings with St. Thomas, which sets up a showdown for first Saturday in Claire Lynch. The team's 15 wins so far this season is one shy of the season total from 2016-17, and marks the best start for Saint Benedict since 2003-04. CSB is 9-0 in the MIAC for the first time since 2002-03.
CSB's defense shut down the Scots (6-10, 2-7) in the first quarter, holding Macalester to just two points.
Chelsey Guetter and
Sidney Schiffler scored and
Megan Thompson hit a three before the Scots scored their first basket of the game, and that bucket at the 4:23 mark was the only bucket they hit in the first as CSB jumped to an 11-2 lead after one.
Macalester got within eight, 15-7, early in the second, but
Niki Fokken scored and later
Breanna Gates hit a layup to push the lead to 16, and a short time later
Courtney Nelson drained a 3-pointer to make it a 17-point game, 27-10, with just over a minute left in the half. A late three by
Haylee Fingalsen put Saint Benedict up 30-12 at halftime.
It didn't take long in the third quarter for CSB to push its lead to 20, and a three from Fingalsen gave CSB its first lead of 30 or more, 48-16, with 3:26 left. Saint Benedict led 53-21 after three quarters, and led by as many as 42 thanks to a 10-0 run to start the fourth quarter that was highlighted by a pair of threes from
Maddie Schmitz.
Fokken finished with nine points and nine rebounds to lead CSB, which shot 37.5 percent from the field. Schmitz and Gates each added eight points and
Kate Banovetz had seven rebounds. CSB hit eight 3-pointers, went 4-for-9 from the line and had 54 rebounds and just 10 turnovers.
Regan Fruh had nine points and Holly Hull finished with eight rebounds to pace the Scots, who shot just under 23 percent from the field. Macalester went 8-for-15 from the line and had 41 rebounds and 16 turnovers.
CSB is back at home Saturday, Jan. 20, when it hosts No. 13 St. Thomas at 3 p.m. in Claire Lynch. Saint Benedict enters the game looking for its first win against the Tommies since 2013.
