ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team did everything in its power to pick up a win over Augsburg University Wednesday evening.
CSB outshot the Auggies 35-16. Saint Benedict rallied from a two-goal deficit to tie the game. It had several near-misses, including one shot that clanged off the top crossbar, back down right in front of the net and was kicked out of the way by a defender.
When the dust settled and 110 minutes of soccer had been played, CSB and the Auggies settled for a 2-2, double overtime tie at Saint Benedict's turf field in St. Joseph. The tie pushes CSB's record to 5-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg is now 4-1-1 and 2-0-1 in the league.
It was the Auggies who dominated early as Ciara Gregory scored a pair of goals within five minutes of each other in the first 15 minutes of the game. The first game in the 11
th minute when she took a shot, got her own rebound and scored, and then in the 15
th minute she took a pass just beyond CSB goalie
Kendall Koenen's reach and tapped the ball in.
Augsburg held the lead until the 37
th minute when
Maren Noble scored the first goal of her CSB career to make it a 2-1 game.
Sydney Sherek took a corner kick for Saint Benedict, and the ball was bobbled around in front of Augsburg's net until Haley Nuemann got a head on it to send it Noble's way, and she sent it into the back of the net with a flick of her ankle.
The Auggies maintained a 2-1 lead until the last 10 minutes of the game. In the 81
st minute, Sherek scored her first goal of the season when she took a perfect pass from
Megan Thompson and beat out the goalie to tie the game 2-2. Both teams had the chance to take the lead with several shots on net in the final minutes of the game, but neither capitalized.
CSB had two shots on net in the first overtime and the Auggies put two on net in the second, but neither team was able to score, and the game ended in a tie.
Saint Benedict outshot Augsburg 35-16, including a 21-9 margin in shots on net. Koenen finished the day with seven saves for CSB.
Jenna Kleason put six shots on net and Thompson finished the day with three.
CSB is on the road and back in action in MIAC play Saturday, Sept. 23, when it travels to Northfield to take on St. Olaf at 3:30 p.m.
