COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team had several chances to score the winning goal against Loras College Sunday afternoon. Four in a row, to be exact.
After two saved shots and one shot that went off the crossbar,
Jane Koch got possession of the ball and sent it past the Duhawk's keeper and into the back of the net to lift CSB to a 3-2 win over region-rival Loras in a nonconference game in Collegeville, Minn.
The win marks the first against Loras since 2014. The Duhwaks are currently receiving votes in the latest Division III Coaches' Poll. It is the Duhawk's first loss of the season, and pushed Saint Benedict's record to 3-0 heading into MIAC play.
CSB held a 2-1 lead much of the second half thanks to a header by
Jenna Kleason off a corner kick by Koch, but Loras (3-1-1) tied the score in the 71
st minute on a cross on the left side of the net. The score stayed tied for nearly 15 minutes, but CSB got the ball and Koch and
Megan Thompson both took shots that were saved, and
Samantha Schorzmann put up a shot that clanged off the top of the crossbar.
The ball bounced off the crossbar and back to Koch, who buried it in the net to score the eventual game-winner in the 84
th minute.
Loras started the scoring in the 19
th minute , but Saint Benedict tied the game in the 28
th minute when
Kelsey Tatarek scored her first goal of the season. She took a shot, got her own rebound and sent another shot into the net, and this one went past the Loras keeper.
The score stayed 1-1 through halftime, but Kleason's header put CSB up 2-1 in the 53
rd minute, and Saint Benedict held that lead until the 71
st minute when Loras tied the score again to set up the late drama.
Sophomore goalie
Kendall Koenen had a huge game in net for CSB as she stopped a career-high 11 shots to help preserve the win. CSB had 26 shots to Loras' 23, and held a 15-13 edge in shots on goal. Thompson put five shots on net and
Maren Noble, Koch and Kleason both had two.
CSB takes its undefeated record to Moorhead Tuesday afternoon when it opens MIAC play at Concordia in a 4 p.m. matchup. Saint Benedict is back at home on its grass field Saturday, Sept. 16 when it hosts St. Thomas at 3:30 p.m., and makes the move to the turf field across the street Sunday, Sept. 17 for a 1 p.m. game against UW-River Falls.
