MOORHEAD, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team received a little extra motivation to keep it going in the heat Tuesday afternoon against Concordia.
CSB – which moved into the NCAA Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll Tuesday – started MIAC play with a 1-0 win over the Cobbers in Moorhead, Minn. The win pushes CSB – which made its 2017 debut in the polls at No. 22 – to 4-0 overall. This marks the best start for the team since 2007 when it started the year 12-0 on its way to a national tournament appearance.
First year forward
Megan Thompson scored the game's only goal, bringing her season total up to five goals in her fourth game in a CSB uniform. She got a pass from junior
Jane Koch in the 12
th minute of play and sent it past Concordia's keeper to put CSB up 1-0.
That's where the score would stay throughout the remainder of the first half and – ultimately – the game. Saint Benedict put up five more shots on net in the first half and tallied four in the second half, but Cobbers' goalie Maddy Reed stopped all nine to keep the score at 0-0.
The CSB defense allowed just two total shots and a single shot on net, and sophomore goalie
Kendall Koenen stopped that one shot to pick up her fourth win of the season. CSB is now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the MIAC. Concordia is 2-2-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Saint Benedict has two games yet to play this week. The team hosts St. Thomas in another MIAC matchup Saturday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. at the team's current grass field on campus. CSB plays its first game on the new turf across College Avenue when it hosts UW-River Falls at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17.
