ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Saturday afternoon at the hands of St. Thomas. The Tommie offense overpowered CSB, and No. 22 Saint Benedict fell 3-0 on its home field in St. Joseph, Minn.
St. Thomas (5-0-1, 2-0) had six shots on net in the first half to CSB's two, and the Tommies converted early to go up 1-0 in the 10
th minute. Emma Theis took a cross from Mallory DeBoom in front of the net and was able to get the ball past CSB sophomore goalie
Kendall Koenen.
Koenen made five first-half saves to keep the score 1-0 at halftime, but the Tommies came into the second half looking for more. DeBoom scored a pair of goals – one in the 52
nd minute and one in the 61
st – to put St. Thomas up 3-0.
Saint Benedict had six shots on net in the second half, including straight-on shots by
Kelsey Tatarek and
Megan Thompson that were saved by UST goalie Katie Lynn.
CSB finished with 14 shots to UST's 20, and the Tommies held a 13-11 edge in shots on net. Thompson finished with four shots on net for CSB and
Jane Koch added three.
Saint Benedict is now 4-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC and is back at home Sunday, Sept. 17, when it hosts UW-River Falls at 1 p.m. Sunday's game is the first at the team's new turf field across College Avenue between the Centennial Apartments and the Renner House.
