WINONA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team wrapped up its weekend series in Winona, Minn., with a 2-2 overtime tie with Saint Mary's University Saturday afternoon.
CSB (4-16-3, 1-12-3) looked to be in control of the game after scoring in the 14
th minute of the third period, but Saint Mary's (6-14-3, 3-10-3) pulled its goalie and scored with 54 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Neither team was able to score in overtime, so the game ended in a tie to give CSB its fifth MIAC point of the season.
Saint Mary's got on the board first with four seconds remaining in the first period, and held a 1-0 lead throughout the entire second period and the first half of the second until CSB tied the game on a goal by
Kaitlyn Miller, her first of the season.
Elli Marvin and
Maddie Dockry were credited with assists.
Saint Benedict took a 2-1 lead in the 14
th minute of the final period when
Kimberly Patterson scored her first goal of the season, and CSB looked poised to pick up its second MIAC win of the year, but the Cardinals scored late to force overtime.
Both teams had 28 shots on net Saturday afternoon. Marvin and
Brigette Miller each had five shots on net for CSB.
Julia Carle made 26 saves for Saint Benedict to keep CSB in the game and force overtime and the tie.
CSB plays its final games of 2016-17 Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18, when it takes on Augsburg, which is currently second in the MIAC. Friday's game is in Minneapolis and Saturday's is at 3 p.m. in St. Cloud, Minn.
