WINONA, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team overcame a three-goal deficit to force overtime, but fell 4-3 in overtime after giving up a power play goal to Saint Mary's Friday night in Winona, Minn.
Saint Mary's (6-14-2, 3-10-2) scored three first-period goals to go up early in the game. The first came just under two minutes into the period, the second came on the power play in the seventh minute and the third came in the 11
th minute.
Saint Benedict didn't waste any time in the second period getting on the board, however, and
Mollie Wise scored CSB's first goal of the game in the second minute to make it 3-1.
Alexis Klatt scored her first goal of the season in the 17
th minute of the period to make it 2-1, and that's where the score would stay heading into the second intermission.
CSB (4-16-2, 1-12-2) tied the game less than two minutes into the third period when
Kylie Eklund scored her second goal of the season, and the game stayed tied throughout the remainder of regulation.
Julia Carle made 10 third-period saves to keep the game tied and send it into overtime.
Carle made on save in overtime, then CSB was called for a hooking penalty 41 seconds into the five-minute overtime, and Saint Mary's scored the game-winner six seconds into the power play.
Both Saint Mary's and CSB finished with 24 shots on net.
Brigette Miller and
Elli Marvin each had four shots on goal to lead CSB and Eklund finished with three.
Amy Jost started the night in net and made two saves in just over 11 minutes, and Carle played the final 49 minutes and finished with 18 saves.
Saint Benedict and the Cardinals are back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday in Winona.
