Duluth, Minn.- The College of Saint Benedict basketball team continued to find success against non-conference opponents, moving their record against out of conference foes to an impressive 6-1 on the season following their 81-48 victory over the College of Saint Scholastica on Dec. 30.
The game marked the most points that Saint Benedict (10-1, 4-0 MIAC) has put up in a game all season, and the 33 point differential was the largest margin of victory thus far this season.
Sophomore
Sidney Schiffler enjoyed her best game in a Saint Benedict uniform when she exceeded her previous personal bests in points and assists, leading all scorers with 14 points and led CSB alongside
Breanna Gates with five assists.
Schiffler rightfully kicked off the scoring, opening the game with a three-pointer, and then quickly dished the ball to Kate Benovetz for a jumper to put CSB up 5-0 less than two minutes into the game. CSB would continue to stretch their lead and would go up 11-2 after the first five minutes of the contest.
St. Scholastica (4-6, 1-3 UMAC) would then find its pace, going on a 10-2 scoring run to get within one point of Saint Benedict at 13-12 with two minutes remaining in the quarter. CSB would regroup however and kicked off their biggest scoring run of the game, outscoring the Saints 5-0 to close the quarter on a trio of free throws from
Alex Johnson and a layup from
Megan Thompson.
The momentum would stay with the visitors as CSB would dominate the first five minutes of the second quarter, extending their lead to 31-14 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Two timely free throws and a layup from
Niki Fokken would stave off a counterattack from CSS, and CSB headed into the locker room for halftime up 44-21.
The second half began much like the first with Schiffler converting early and often- opening with a three pointer just 12 seconds into the third quarter. Thought CSS would outscore CSB 21-19 in the third quarter, the last points of the quarter came off a
Megan Thompson jumper to show that Saint Benedict was still in control of the game, with their lead sitting at 63-42 heading into the final quarter.
Chelsey Guetter would continue the scoring emphasis for CSB, sinking a three-pointer 23 seconds into the final frame off an assist from Schiffler. CSS would quickly convert a layup from Chelsea Swatek, but a Fokken layup would respond for CSB. Free throws by Fokken and Banovetz would continue to keep offensive possession. Both teams would then focus their efforts on defense, and the game would close out following a string of CSB free throws by
Johanna Merten and
Sarah Ouimet to bring the score to it's final position of 81-48.
Close behind Schiffler's 14 points was Banovetz who posted 12 points and three rebounds on the day. Fellow seniors Fokken and Guetter were close behind with Fokken adding 11 points and 7 rebounds, and Guetter posting 10 points and a perfect shooting percentage going 3-3 in FG, 2-2 from beyond the arch, and 2-2 from the line.
CSB will return to conference action with a trip north to Moorhead to take on Concordia on Jan. 3 for a 7:45 pm game.
