CSB Soccer Battle Through Weather, Defeats Hamline 2-1

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - It was a game that saw it all: weather delays, a dance-off, and a come behind victory by the College of Saint Benedict soccer team. CSB took down Hamline 2-1 in a wet and wild game that changed the face of the MIAC standings.

CSB (9-2-2, 5-2-2 MIAC) would find themselves having to battle back after Hamline went up 1-0 halfway through the first half. Brittany Beckman beat out the CSB defenders and then shot the ball to the lower right hand corner of the goal, just besting the reach of sophomore goalkeeper Kendall Koenen. CSB would put lots of pressure on Hamline's goalkeeper in the first half, outshooting the visitors by a 19-3 margin, but found themselves unable to convert in the frame.

The teams would play two and a half minutes of the second half before a thunderstorm would cease play for just over an hour. When the teams returned to the turf, CSB was quick to reapply the pressure on Hamline's defense and goalkeeper.

In the 63rd minute the pressure finally paid off when junior Jane Koch received a long pass from sophomore Madelyn Curtis to beat the Hamline defenders and even the game up at 1-1. Koch would factor into the scoring again when she dished a beautiful pass to sophomore Samantha Schorzman in the middle of the box, enabling her to beat the Pipers goalkeeper and put CSB up 2-1 with just under 13 minutes remaining in the game. Despite opportunities by both teams, the game would end that way with CSB capturing the key MIAC win.

CSB would end the game dominating in the stats column, outshooting the Pipers 27-4 (14-2 on goal). Koenen would end the game with one save, while her Hamline counterpart Kat Armstrong saved 12 shots.

The win now moves CSB to 5-2-2 in conference action and out of a three-way tie for fourth in the standings, to stand alone at the spot heading into the final week of regular season action. Saint Benedict travels to Macalester on Oct. 25 before returning home to close out the season against Carleton on Oct. 28.
