ST. PAUL, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict played to a double overtime tie with Macalester Wednesday night, but the news CSB had been waiting for was decided before the outcome of its 110-minute game: it's headed back to the MIAC tournament.
Movement elsewhere around the league ensured Saint Benedict a spot in the league's six-team postseason tournament, and the team's tie with the Scots pushed it up to fourth in the MIAC with one game left in the regular season.
After Wednesday's games, Augburg leads the league at 7-1-2, St. Olaf is second (6-2-2), St. Thomas is third (6-3-1) and CSB is fourth at 5-2-3. Depending on the outcome of Saturday's game, Saint Benedict could move up as high as second. Gustavus is also qualified, and one spot is left open as the regular season winds down.
Both teams had shots that went wide early in the first half Wednesday night, and the Scots (6-6-4, 3-4-3) had two shots on net that CSB goalie
Kendall Koenen stopped.
Corrine Seehusen and
Karen Phillips each had a shot on net in the final three minutes of the first half, but they were both saved, and
Jane Koch had a shot blocked.
Macalester had two early shots on net saved by Koenen in the second half, and CSB had a number of shots blocked. Both CSB and Macalester hit the crossbar once, but nothing went into the net and the game went to overtime.
Macalester had one shot in net in the first overtime and
Megan Thompson put a shot on goal in the second, but neither went in.
Koenen finished with six saves on the night to help preserve the shutout and the tie. CSB and the Scots both had 13 shots, but Macalester held a 6-5 edge in shots on net.
Saint Benedict is back at home to wrap up the regular season as it hosts Carleton at 3:30 p.m. Final pairings for the conference tournament will be announced Saturday night.
