ST. PAUL, Minn. – Four days after losing a two-point heartbreak at Carleton, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team flipped the tables Wednesday night at St. Kate's. The Wildcats had two opportunities to take the lead or tie the game late but failed, and
Sidney Schiffler hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left to help CSB hold on for the 50-47 win in St. Paul.
Saint Benedict is now 12-6 overall and in fourth in the MIAC with an 8-3 record. St. Kate's is now 11-7 overall and 5-6 and in sixth in the conference.
CSB led by two, 44-42, with 2:46 left, but St. Kate's hit a three to take a one-point lead.
Niki Fokken hit a jumper to give CSB a 46-45 lead with 1:59 remaining, but then the Wildcats scored again to go up one, 47-46, with 1:16 remaining. A layup by
Kate Banovetz gave CSB a 48-47 lead with 38 seconds left, and St. Kate's missed on a jumper with 12 seconds left to give CSB the ball back.
Schiffler hit both free throws after getting fouled to make it a three-point game, and St. Kate's missed a last-second three-point shot to help Saint Benedict walk away with the win.
CSB looked to take control of the game after starting the third quarter on an 11-2 run, but the Wildcats went on a 4-0 run in the final three minutes of the third quarter to make it a one-point game, 33-32, heading into the final quarter.
The Wildcats led 11-8 after one quarter, and maintained a 22-20 win at halftime.
Fokken and Banovetz each finished with 17 points to lead CSB, which shot nearly 40 percent from the field.
Chelsey Guetter led the team with 10 rebounds and Fokken added nine.
Annie Dittberner had seven assists for CSB, which went 8-for-18 from the line and had 47 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
LaShay Holt led St. Kate's with 13 points and nine rebounds and Kennedy Jennings added 11 points. The Wildcats shot just 27.6 percent from the field and went 12-for-14 from the line. They had 32 rebounds and 11 turnovers.
CSB returns home and looks to keep its nine-game home winning streak alive Saturday, Jan. 28, when it hosts No. 3 St. Thomas at 3 p.m.
