Fokken scores 21 to lead CSB past Hamline

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Niki Fokken used a little bit of birthday magic, her love for basketball and crowd support to help lead the College of Saint Benedict basketball team to a 58-47 win over Hamline University Wednesday night in Claire Lynch.

Fokken finished with 21 points on her 21st birthday to help CSB pick up its ninth home win of the year and stay undefeated in Claire Lynch. She also added a career-high eight blocks and five rebounds to her stat line for Saint Benedict, which used an 18-point third quarter to break open the game.

CSB improved to 11-5 overall and 7-2 in the MIAC and stays tied for third in the league with Bethel after Wednesday's win. The victory over Hamline also put some space between CSB and Saint Mary's, which is now in fifth with a 5-4 conference record.

After a close first quarter, CSB led 11-9 thanks to a late layup by Kate Banovetz. Fokken and Chelsey Guetter combined to score CSB's first nine points of the second and put Saint Benedict up 20-12 with just over six minutes left in the half. Hamline made a run to get within three, 22-19, but Breanna Gates hit two free throws and a layup to help put CSB up 26-21 at halftime.

Fokken scored 10 of Saint Benedict's first 13 points in the third quarter, including eight straight ot make it 38-27 with just under three minutes left. Alex Johnson and Annie Dittberner each hit a pair of free throws to end the quarter and put CSB up 12, 44-32.

A layup by Guetter in the fourth put CSB up 15, 53-38. The Pipers hit two threes to make it a nine-point game with 2:41 left, but Fokken hit a pair of free throws to get CSB back on track and allow her team to hold on for the win.

Guetter finished with 16 points and eight rebounds for CSB, which shot 35.3 percent from the field. Saint Benedict went 20-for-29 from the line and had 37 rebounds and 16 turnovers.

Chloe Graves and Alaina Quaranta each had 13 points for the Pipers, who are 5-11 overall and 2-7 in the MIAC. The Pipers shot 33 percent from the field, went 3-for-4 from the line and had 34 rebounds and 20 turnovers.
