CSB shuts out Whitworth, improves to 2-0

Heather K. Postgame Interviwew

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – In its season-opener Thursday afternoon, the College of Saint Benedict soccer team played from behind until late in the game to force overtime before beating UW-Eau Claire. Friday morning against Whitworth, CSB scored early and maintained that lead.

Saint Benedict improved to 2-0 on the season with a 2-0 shutout against Whitworth Friday. The game started just over 12 hours after CSB cleared the field after Friday's overtime win against UWEC. Saint Benedict, however, came out looking energized and got on the board within the first 15 minutes of the game.

After a missing a scoring opportunity on a corner kick a few minutes earlier, Olivia Musser scored the first goal of her career in the 13th minute when her corner kick from the right side of the goal curved past the Whitworth goalie and into the net.

CSB held that lead and, 12 minutes later, Taylor Hedin – who assisted on both of CSB's goals Thursday – scored her first goal of the season in the 25th minute off an assist from Jessica Trossen. Hedin's shot hit the inside of the cross bar and bounced out, but it had crossed the plane of the net so it was ruled a goal.

Saint Benedict held its 2-0 lead throughout the rest of the first half, and that's where the score stayed until the end of the game. CSB had two shots on net in the second half, but Whitworth made both saves.

CSB and Whitworth both finished with six shots on net. Senior goalie Heather Kaluzniak stopped all six shots to preserve the shutout and pick up her second win of the year.

Saint Benedict is back at home for its third nonconference game of the year Monday, Sept. 5, when it hosts UW-Oshkosh at 3:30 p.m.
