CSB splits two matches to wrap up Wartburg tourney

WAVERLY, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team split a pair of matches to wrap up its weekend at the Wartburg Tournament Saturday afternoon.

After falling 3-1 to Luther Friday night, CSB swept Buena Vista 3-0 Saturday morning, then lost 3-0 to host-school Wartburg – which is receiving votes in Division III – Saturday afternoon. Saint Benedict is now 5-7 overall as it heads into the heart of its MIAC schedule in the coming weeks.

One day after recording a career-high 10 kills against Luther, first year Cami Hoover set a new career-high Saturday morning with 15 kills to lead CSB against Buena Vista. Saint Benedict defeated the Beavers 25-14, 25-14 and 25-16 to start the morning. Megan Pekarek had 32 assists and Haley LaValle led the team with 14 digs. Lauren Mathews had four blocks and Pekarek added three.

In the second match of the day, CSB gave Wartburg all it could handle, but fell just short. Wartburg won the first set 25-19, then Saint Benedict pushed the second set to extra points before the Knights won 30-28, and Wartburg won the third set 25-15.

CSB led 23-18 late in the second set against Wartburg, and a kill from Pekarek made it 24-19. But the Knights went on a five-point rally to tie the score at 24, and after a kill from Lauren Mathews made it 25-24, Wartburg tied the score again. Kills from Mathews and Briana Schmiesing put CSB up, but both times the Knights tied the score, and a pair of Knight kills ended the match.

Pekarek finished with nine kills to pace CSB, and she also had 26 assists and eight digs. Schmiesing and Liz Schultz both added eight kills, and LaValle finished with 18 digs. Liz Waugh also had 10 digs.

CSB plays at home for the second time this season Wednesday, Sept. 21 when it hosts Macalester at 7 p.m.
