WAVERLY, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict volleyball team played right with Luther College Friday afternoon, but fell short in a 3-1 loss in the first day of the Wartburg Tournament in Waverly, Iowa.
After CSB won the first set 25-23, Luther came back to win the next three sets 25-23, 25-21 and 25-23. A block by
Ashley Trustheim and
Briana Schmiesing tied the first set at 20-20 for CSB, and
Megan Pekarek had a service ace to put CSB up 21-20. A kill from
Briana Schmiesing made it 23-22, and a Luther attack error and service error gave CSB the win.
Luther went on a 13-5 run to start the second set, but CSB fought back and kills from Schmiesing and
Meghan Koop later tied the score at 21-21. A pair of kills from Schmiesing got CSB within 24-23, but a Norse kill ended the game. The third set was close throughout, but Luther was able to pull ahead for the win.
Kills from Trustheim and
Cami Hoover put CSB up 17-12 in the fourth set, and Saint Benedict pushed the lead to 21-16, but Luther went on a 4-1 run to close the gap to 22-20, then went on a 4-1 one to end the set and the match.
Hoover and Schmiesing both finished with 10 kills to lead CSB, which had 48 total kills. Pekarek had 36 assists and eight digs, and
Haley LaValle led the team with 14 digs.
Liz Waugh also added 10 digs for CSB.
Saint Benedict returns to action Saturday with a pair of matches in Waverly. CSB takes on Buena Vista at 10 a.m. and host-school Wartburg at 2 p.m.
