CSB tennis beats BVU, falls to Luther

Buena Vista Results | Luther Results

DECORAH, Iowa – The College of Saint Benedict tennis team split a pair of nonconference matches Saturday afternoon in its opening weekend of the 2016-17 season. CSB started the day with an 8-1 win against Buena Vista before dropping its second match of the day 7-2 to Luther in a match that was closer than the score indicated.

"We could not have asked for a better start to the season," said first-year head coach Michael Engdahl, who picked up the first win of his CSB career Saturday. "Everything we have worked on the last week in practice the women did an amazing job translating into the match. The women should be proud of the way they fought. Luther is a solid team, and we went toe-to-toe with them and gave ourselves a chance to win the match."

Three CSB first years picked up the first wins of their collegiate careers against Buena Vista. First-year Tessa Rahrick teamed up with Laura Finn to win 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Erin Kolbow – another first year – also picked up her first win at CSB when she and Taylor Kraemer won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles. Megan Hintz and Emily Erickson wrapped up the sweep in doubles play with an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles.

Finn came back in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, and Rahrick won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles for CSB. Kolbow fell in extra sets at No. 3 singles 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, but Kraemer won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. Ashley Kraemer won her first match at the college level with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles and Ellen Stensrud finished the day with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.

CSB played right with a Luther squad that is currently 4-0. The Norse swept doubles play, but Finn and Rahrick pushed the set to 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, and Taylor Kraemer and Kolbow got to 8-7 before losing at No. 2 doubles. Hintz and Erickson fell 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Finn and Stensrud both picked up singles wins for CSB. Finn won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, and Stensrud picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles. Rahrick fell 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 singles, Kolbow fell 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, Taylor Kraemer lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 singles and Ashley Kraemer lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
