ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team continues the conference season this week when it hosts Augsburg College. The Blazers welcome the Auggies at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Claire Lynch Hall.
About Augsburg
The Auggies head into the matchup 7-1 overall and 1-1 in the MIAC, including a 69-60 loss against No. 6 St. Thomas Saturday in Minneapolis. Augsburg is coming off a 2015-16 season where it went 14-11 overall and 9-9 in the MIAC. Four Auggies average double digits in points this season. Tamira McLemore lead the MIAC with 42 assists and second in the MIAC with 20 steals. Aiza Wilson leads the MIAC with 24 made three-pointers followed by teammate Abby Jordan with 23.
Last Year
Saint Benedict beat Augsburg 63-56 last year on Jan. 16 in Minneapolis. The Blazers went into the half tied 28-28, before pulling away in the second half. Augsburg went 0-13 from behind the three-point line.
Annie Dittberner had 15 points,
Macy Kelly had nine points and nine rebounds, and
Alison Newton had nine points and nine assists to lead Saint Benedict. Alaina Quaranta and Jessica Lillquist both had 15 points for the Auggies.
Who to Watch
Through six games
Niki Fokken leads the team with 10.5 points per game followed by
Chelsey Guetter with 10.3 points per game, and
Chelsey Guetter averages 7.5 rebounds per game. Fokken was named MIAC athlete of the week after scoring a career-high 25 points Saturday.
The Storyline
Saint Benedict has opened the 2016-17 season with six straight wins and the latest was an 88-52 win against Carleton on Saturday. That marked the first time Saint Benedict had scored 88 points in a game since Feb. 4, 2013. CSB looks to stay undefeated with a win over Augsburg before another conference game Saturday, Dec. 10, when they travel to #5 nationally ranked St. Thomas at 1 p.m.
