WASHINGTON, D.C. – The College of Saint Benedict basketball team wrapped up its East Coast trip and the 2016 portion of its schedule Friday with a 58-43 loss to Washington & Jefferson on the second day of a holiday classic hosted by Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
Senior
Macy Kelly led the team in scoring for the second time this season and earned all-tournament honors after scoring 15 points in Friday's loss and nine Thursday in a loss to FDU-Florham.
A pair of baskets by
Niki Fokken put CSB (7-4) up 8-4 early on the Presidents, and four straight free throws by
Annie Dittberner put CSB up 17-13 at the end of the first quarter. A jumper by Fokken early in the second put CSB up six, 19-13, but from there Washington & Jefferson went on a 13-0 run to take a 26-19 lead with 2:12 left in the half. The Presidents led 27-21 at halftime.
Kelly hit a three as part of a 7-0 Saint Benedict run to start the second half, and she hit another three a short time later to put CSB up 31-30, but that's the last time CSB would have the lead. Washington & Jefferson led 43-33 at the end of the third, and maintained a double-digit lead throughout much of the fourth quarter.
Kelly finished with 15 points to lead CSB and Fokken finished with 13.
Chelsey Guetter had nine rebounds for Saint Benedict, which shot less than 30 percent from the field for the second straight game. CSB went 9-for-16 from the line and had 39 rebounds and 20 turnovers.
Danielle Parker led all scorers with 19 points for the Presidents, who are 6-4, and she also had eight rebounds. Washington & Jefferson shot 36 percent from the field, went 8-for-11 from the line and had 40 rebounds and 14 turnovers.
CSB returns to MIAC play and is back at home Wednesday, Jan. 4, when it hosts Concordia at 7 p.m. CSB is 6-0 at home this season.
