CSB snaps skid, beats CUW 2-1

MEQUON, Wis. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team snapped a seven-game losing streak Saturday afternoon and heads into the holiday break on a high note thanks to a 2-1 win over Concordia-Wisconsin. The win in Mequon, Wis., ends the nonconference series in a split as the Falcons won 5-1 Friday.

Both Elli Marvin and Allison Kirk scored for CSB, which is now 3-7 overall heading into break. The goal was Marvin's 10th of the season, putting her just one shy of her career high of 11 goals in a season, which she set as a junior in 2015-16. Marvin's latest goal also marks the 11th time a CSB hockey player has scored double-digit goals in a season since 2001-02, and she is just the third player to record 10 or more goals in more than one season in their CSB hockey careers.

Erin Baldwin scored 14 goals in 2004-05 and 12 in 2006-07, and Susan Engel scored 17 goals in 2001-02, 17 more in 2003-04 and 11 in 2004-05.

Marvin also assisted on Kirk's goal, bringing her season point total up to 16 to match her 2015-16 season total.  The last time a CSB hockey player had more than 16 points in a season was 2006-07 when Baldwin had 18 points.

Marvin's goal Saturday was the first of the game and came on the power play in the 11th minute in the second period. Brigette Miller recorded the assist, her sixth of the season. The Falcons (4-5-2) evened things up less than 30 seconds later, and the score stayed tied heading into the third period. It didn't take very long in the third to end the tie, however, as Kirk scored her fourth goal of the year in the second minute off assists from Marvin and Kaitlyn Miller.

CUW pulled its goal with just over 1:30 left in the game, but first year goalie Amy Jost made six saves in the final minute and a half of play to help CSB hold on for the win.

For the second straight game, CUW had 30 shots to CSB's 29. Miller finished with five shots on net and Marvin added four. Jost made 29 saves to pick up the first win of her collegiate career.

Saint Benedict is off now until Friday, Jan. 6, when it hosts UW-Stevens Point at 7:30 p.m. at the MAC in St. Cloud.
