ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The College of Saint Benedict hockey team gave up a pair of power play goals Friday night as it started 2017 with a 3-1 loss to UW-Stevens Point at the MAC in St. Cloud.
Mollie Wise scored the lone goal for CSB, which tied the game early in the second period, but gave up a pair of unanswered goals later in the second. Saint Benedict is now 3-8 overall in 2016-17.
Stevens Point (6-4-1) opened the scoring five minutes into the game when Maddie Schlossmacher scored on the power play to put the Pointers up 1-0. They held that lead until the third minute of the second period when Wise scored off assists from
Kaitlyn Miller and
Katie Cristan.
Less than 10 minutes later, however, Stevens Point regained the lead when Lauren Smith scored in the 12
th minute, and Alex Grubbs scored in the 16
th minute to make it a two-goal lead for the Pointers. Neither team scored in the final period.
Stevens Point finished with 26 shots on net to CSB's 22.
Elli Marvin had five shots on goal and
Courtney Conlin and
Hannah Esselman each had three.
Julia Carle made 23 saves for Saint Benedict.
CSB is back in action Saturday, Jan. 7, when it hosts Marian at 2 p.m. The Sabres beat Hamline 3-0 Friday in the first game of the weekend. Stevens Point and Hamline play at noon to start Saturday's action.
