ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – For the first time since the 2013-14 season, the College of Saint Benedict basketball team is off to a 3-0 start.
CSB wrapped up the Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament Sunday afternoon with a 63-54 win against UW-Stout to stay perfect and pick up its third win of the year. Senior
Alison Newton was named the tournament MVP and junior
Chelsey Guetter was named to the all-tournament team.
Newton hit two threes early in the first quarter to help CSB to an 8-0 lead, and CSB eventually pushed that lead to 17-2 thanks to baskets from
Kate Banovetz,
Niki Fokken,
Morgan Merritt and Guetter. CSB led 19-9 at the end of the first quarter.
CSB outscored the Blue Devils 10-3 to start the second quarter, and a three-point play by
Alex Johnson made it 29-12 with 6:20 left in the second. Stout went on a short run to cut the lead to 10, 29-19, but Guetter and Johnson both scored in the final 1:20 of the quarter to keep CSB up 36-19 at halftime.
A pair of free throws by newton and a single free throw from Banovetz pushed CSB's lead to 21, 45-24, midway through the third quarter, and Guetter scored late in the third to make it ta 21-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Stout cut the gap to nine in the final minute of the fourth quarter, but Newton added a pair of free throws to help seal the win.
Guette finished with 18 points and seven rebounds and Newton had 15 points and three rebounds. Banovetz also had nine points and eight rebounds. CSB shot 39 percent from the field and went 18-for-23 from the line. CSB had 41 rebounds and 19 turnovers.
Anna Brown led Stout (1-2) with 14 points and seven rebounds. The Blue Devils shot 30 percent from the field, went 16-for-24 from the line and had 33 rebounds and 13 turnovers.
CSB is back at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 22, when it hosts Minnesota-Morris.
